Did you know that if you have an Oklahoma drivers’ license, you are required to carry Oklahoma auto insurance? Many people assume if they do not own a vehicle, they do not need auto insurance, but they do as long as they have an Oklahoma drivers’ license.
The state o f Oklahoma requires all drivers to carry a minimum of 25/50/25 in auto liability insurance. This means the liability insurance will cover only the other driver and vehicle if you are involved in an auto accident and are found at fault. It does not cover you as the driver and it does not cover your vehicle.
You may wonder what those numbers mean, 25/50/25. The first 25, is $25,000. It will cover the other driver and their passengers in an accident. The most any one person will receive from your auto insurance company is $25,000 for bodily injury. The most they will receive all together from your insurance company is $50,000 for their bodily injury. This is the second number in the 25/50/25 coverage. The last 25, or $25,000, will go to the other person’s vehicle or property. These are the limits. The insurance company may pay any amount below these numbers, but not any more than this.
Some drivers think as long as they have Oklahoma auto insurance, they are covered. But what happens if their car insurance does not cover all the injury caused to the other person and their passengers? Or what happens if the vehicle you hit is worth $35,000 or the building damaged in an accident costs up to $50,000 in repairs? Who pays for that? You do! As the driver, you are responsible.
Yes, the minimum coverage will make you a legal Oklahoma driver. However, these liability limits will not go very far in case of an auto accident in which you are found at fault. Hospitals cost quite a bit these days; $25,000 does not go as far as it used to. Can you cover the rest if the other drivers’ injuries go over $25,000?
Consider raising your OK auto liability insurance coverage. For a few dollars more a month, you can have double the coverage! This is more protection for you and a smaller chance of you having to pay money out of your pocket when your auto insurance does not cover all the damages. Check your current auto policy. Do you think your liability limits will protect you?
